Swimming Pool Repairs & Waterproofing

When repairing a pool you must make sure that you are working with a material that can withstand “negative hydrostatic pressure.” We at Phoenix Pool Brothers only use the best products and that keep the materials from chipping, blistering or peeling. Because we use such top of the line products for water proofing and repair we are able to save you time and money while protecting your investment.

The products we use are guaranteed in pool repair and pool leak repairs. The products have incredible durability and flexibility to withstand movement.

Pool Repairs

Now that you have that wonderful swimming pool you have to take care of it and know when to call for help. Be sure to maintain your pumps and filters on a regular basis. Keep the pool clean by skimming the top often to remove the noticeable floating debris. If you have an automatic cleaner be sure to check the bag daily especially after a storm or heavy rain and be sure the unit is operating properly. Check for damp areas around the pool, which could indicate a leak. Keep the tiles clean a

bove and below the water line. Cleaning the tiles could become a monumental task if it is not kept up. The lining of the pool, weather concrete, vinyl or fiberglass each has its own upkeep. Even though fiberglass is a very sturdy material it reacts to chemicals, which can cause unsightly discoloration. In the worst case an acid wash will be needed. Vinyl is a durable material, however it can tear. Repair small tears immediately, because large tears may necessitate replacement of the entire vinyl liner. Concrete is the mot durable of the three however it can crack. Cracking is more of a concern in colder climates where you have a hot summer and winter freeze-and-thaw conditions. Small cracks can easily be repaired, however large one will probably require resurfacing the entire pool. Cracks or tears that are not taken care of immediately can result in major over hauling of your pool and possibly even the system itself. Don’t hesitate to call in a professional to make sure the work is done properly.

How to deal with a leak in your swimming pool If you notice your level of water …

How to deal with a leak in your swimming pool

If you notice your level of water in your swimming pool going down and you are filling it one or more times a week it is probable that your pool has a leak. This is not something to worry too much about if you are just worried about the water level because a lot of water is lost each and every time someone gets in and out of the pool. Almost all pool owners will experience some time of pool leak in their time of ownership which if left untreated for too long can really damage the integrity of your swimming pool. In essence leaks will increase the amounts of chemicals that your pools needs and also reduce the water level in your pool. If you do have a leak you will want to contact a Phoenix Pool Cleaning specialist immediately to make sure that you do not compromise and of your pools critical and costly pool equipment.

Leaks can be caused by:

- Getting in and out of the water

- Plumbing failure

- Breach in the cement structure or pool shell

If you think you may have a leak you can take a bucket of water and place it in the pool and monitor how the level goes down to make sure that you are not just losing water based on the climate you live in. Climate is definitely a factor when you are continuously refilling your pool. If your water loss is not due to climate then you should call a Scottsdale Pool Cleaner and they will bring out their specific equipment to see if your pool may have a leak.

Some of the tests performed by our Pool Cleaner Specialists are:

-Pressure testing on the plumbing

-Next they will examine your pool equipment to see if there are any leaks or dried water stains which could indicate the same.

- Next would be to examine the pool shell to see if there are any cracks that water may be moving through.

Pool filters One of the most important components to a well run and maintained swimming pool is …

Pool filters

One of the most important components to a well run and maintained swimming pool is its filtering system. Even with the most state of the art cleaning system, something is going to get through and get trapped. There are three types of filters, Sand Filters, Cartridge Filters and Diatomaceous Earth Filters (DE filter). Sand Filters are the easiest to maintain. The filter is a tank full of No. 20 crystalline silica graded sand that the water runs through. Water comes into the tank through a diffuser. The water goes through the sand where the debris is caught between the grains of sand. After the water reaches the bottom of the sand it goes through the laterals and is then returned to the pool. A sand filter is able to trap anything down to 40 microns in size. If the debris is smaller than 40 microns it will pass through the filter and be returned into the pool.

Cartridge filters make life a little easier since they can be removed and cleaned without back washing. Their filtration is about the same as sand, down to 40 microns. Most cartridge filters only need to be cleaned once or twice a year depending on the pool usage.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters are the best of the three considering it can trap anything down to 5-8 microns in size. I big jump from 40 microns with the Sand and Cartridge Filters. DE comes from a natural sedimentary rock which when crumbled turns into a fine powder. The DE filter tank has a layer of fine DE powder and a layer of plastic covered grids, which the water passes through, traps the debris down to 5-8 microns and is then pumped back into the swimming pool.

Pool pumps

The heart of the swimming pool is its pump/filtration system. Water should be completely pumped through the entire pool at a minimum of ever 6-8 hours. So your pump selection is dependent on the water capacity of your pool. Check the manufacturer’s product information and bear in mind that every pump is going to run according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Basing your decision on just horsepower is not wise. Basically, every pump is different. Most importantly, the volume of water pumped in gallon per minute (GPM) against the loss friction of your pools plumbing system (head loss) is critical. The pump with the filtration system has the capability to pull back the water at the drain, filter it, and then run the water back to the pool….clean. The wrong pump can cause your filter system to not work properly, thereby, causing the water in your pool to be cloudy and become a host for many harmful bacteria. Consult with a pool expert if you are selecting a new pump.

Pool pumps that are above ground are not self-priming and are built to operate below the water level line in the pool. This type of pump is not appropriate for an in-ground pool. In-ground pool pumps are above ground and are designed to lift the water and prime it. Again…all pool pumps are different.

Pool Heaters

If you want to have a comfortable warm temperature year round then you need to invest in a pool heater. Basically there are two choices, an electric/gas heater or you can go solar. Electric is going to increase your electric bill considerably depending on how long you run it and the time of year. You can run the solar during the warmer months and switch to the electric in the colder months that way you can take advantage of the cost savings on the electric heater. In addition to the heater you should also invest in a pool cover. This will trap the heat just on top of the water creating a solar cover when the pool is not in use. There are many brands to choose from and they vary depending on the size of the pool and the gallons of water to be pumped through the unit. Some of the major brands include Raypac, Pentair, Jandy, Hayward, Thermotron, Coates and Lochinvar.

Weekly Pool Maintenance Maintaining your pool on a weekly basis will pay off in the long run. …

Weekly Pool Maintenance

Maintaining your pool on a weekly basis will pay off in the long run. Here are some of the things you need to do on a regular basis to prevent build up and equipment problems. Every couple of days removes the dirt and leaves that occur on the surface with a skimmer. This is an easy task and should be done more frequently after any type of rain or dust storm. After a storm you will find leaves, branches and all types of dust and dirt that can settle on the bottom of the pool or even clog the filters and the strainer baskets. Check the strainer baskets at least once a week and be sure to empty them. Run the pool vacuum system at least once a week to keep the bottom of the pool clean, more often is preferred since the bottom of the pool is the hardest area to clean manually and a lot of dirt can settle there. Scrub the walls and tiles to keep the buildup of algae and calcium down. Clean the pool filter often, but not more than the manufacturer recommendations. Maintain consistent water levels especially during the summer months when evaporation is higher due to the higher temperatures and there is more activity in the summer. If water levels change unexpectedly, be sure to check for leaks. Check the pH often especially during times of heavy pool use. Keep the pH between 7.2 and 7.8 and maintain the other chemicals. You may have to “shock” the pool to keep the water clear. Check the pool heater and be sure it is working properly. Maintenance on the pool heater should be done by a pool professional.

During the winter months, you can drain the pool which will decrease maintenance cost and time and will also allow for thorough cleaning and repairs if any are needed. Be sure to leave some water in the bottom of the pool if you are draining it for the season. If your pool is in an area where the temperatures drop below freezing, remove as much water as possible from the pipes, filter and heater. Disconnect the pump, heater and chemical feeders.

When preparing to go on vacation use a test stripe to determine your chemical levels. Raise your chemical levels somewhat while you are gone since they will lower naturally. Shock the pool the day of your departure and invest in a pool cover if possible. You might want to check with a neighbor to keep an eye on the pool and to treat as needed or even better yet, hire a professional service to maintain your pool. You really don’t want to come home to a pool full of cloudy, dirty water.

High Quality Chemicals and Products Two of the primary concerns when having a Phoenix swimming pool service …

High Quality Chemicals and Products

Two of the primary concerns when having a Phoenix swimming pool service is that the chemicals and chlorine levels are well maintained. The right recipe of chemicals will certainly yield a healthy and safe Phoenix swimming pool. The answer is not always adding more chlorine but more in maintaining a healthy balance of all crucial components. By having our professional swimming pool professionals do the work to keep your pools chemisty in line and well balanced.

Proper Weekly Maintenance will ensure that your pool is:

- Properly guarded against algae and bacteria

- Sanitation and cleanliness are achieved

- Regular sweeping and skimming takes place

- Ensuring that your equipment and filtration are operating correctly.

High quality chemicals and chlorine

A pool filter is the main pump to circulate and filter the water in your swimming pool. However, it is the precise manipulation of the chemicals that keep your pool in balance. Quality chemicals are necessary to keep the bacteria at bay. If untreated water is left in a pool it becomes the perfect breading area for disease carrying pathogens. Improper chemical balance can damage different parts of the pool, can irritate the skin and eyes and the water can get very cloudy and unappealing.

Chlorine, also known as calcium hypochlorite (a solid) or sodium hypochlorite (a liquid) is the most frequently used disinfectant to remove the unwanted pathogens from a swimming pool. When added to the water the reaction between the chlorine and water creates hypochlorous acid. This chemical reaction destroys bacteria and other possible pathogens in the water by attacking the lipids and destroying the enzymes and structures in the cell by an oxidation reaction. Another disinfectant used is bromide.

Chlorine is available in liquid, powder or tablet and can be put in the water at any point of the cycle. Generally speaking most pool professionals prefer adding it after the filter process using a chemical feeder.

Remember that once the chlorine hits the water it becomes hypochlorous acid and is not always stable. Sunlight can degrade the effectiveness of hypochlorous acid which then requires a stabilizing agent, namely cyanuric acid. This combines with the chlorine to create a more stable environment that does not degrade with ultraviolet light rays given off by the sun. Be careful that your pool does not start to form chloramines, which is a combination of ammonia, which is found in urine, and hence produces poor sanitary conditions, irritation to the skin and eyes and produces a most unpleasant odor. A strong odor indicates that there is not enough hypochlorous acid. To rid the pool of the unwanted chloramines, you must “shock treat” the pool by adding very strong doses of chemicals to rid the pool of unwanted organic matter and chemical compounds.

The other area of concern to maintain a healthy pool is to maintain the PH levels. This is t the proportion of acids and alkalis in the water. If the pool water is to acidic metal corrosion can occur on the pool equipment, etching can be caused on the surface and skin irritation can occur on anyone who jumps into the pool. If the water is too alkaline you will notice the water becoming cloudy, and there can be scaling on the pool surface as well as the plumbing equipment. Either way too much acid or alkaline will affect the chlorine. The recommended pH scale is 7.2-7.8 to maintain optimal swimming, health and equipment conditions. Your pool professional will know how to raise or lower the pH by adding either sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate to raise the pH or muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate to lower the pH.

Your pool professional will also monitor your pool for “total alkalinity, calcium hardness and total dissolved solids”. Maintaining a healthy pool is an art and requires frequent testing, cleaning, and chemistry which is why most pool owners hire a qualified pool service to keep their pool clean, safe and picture perfect.

We at Phoenix Pool Brothers Phoenix Pool Cleaning Service can certify that we only use the highest grade chemicals and equipment to protect your investment.
